Read the first three chapters and it was very "Mad Libs" - maybe it gets better, but I don't think I'll take the time to find out. If I were a high school student assigned to read Austen, I'd get a real kick out of this, but I'm not, so I didn't. ...more

When I first began this book, I disliked it. The co-author mangled some of Austen's most elegant prose, and the interleaving of zombie-killing with the rest of the story seemed clumsy. However, later in the book, the co-author leaves more of the best passages intact and the integration of zombie hoopla became more clever (the treatment of Charlotte and Mr. Collins was particularly interesting). Overall, an irreverent but affectionate re-casting of a classic story.

Is it just me, or is a lot of Austeniana lately being produced by people who don't really seem to like Jane Austen all that much? You know, they seem to think she needs some really unsubtle sexual innuendo (how many jokes about testicles and "his most English parts" do we need? how about none?), and hate her characters (Lizzie may despair of Lydia and her mother, but seems rather unlikely to fantasize about killing either one). For me the whole zombie business got old very quickly. It was funny and I think a great concept, but I really would rather just read the original.
