Eeeek! That was a fun read. I have a friend that cannot read/watch stories with any children in peril, and I kept thinking, this would be THE WORST book for her! Shout out to MT weather last night, which made it possible for me to finish this one up in the house alone while the rain poured outside and the wind gusted spookily. What was that noise?!

This book is pretty short and the story is taut - so much DREAD. Perfect for Halloween!

Intensely atmospheric, Malerman's ability to conjure a hectic, terrified feeling from beginning to end is masterful and almost unbelievable in a first novel. This book was thought provoking and creepy. Seeing something makes you want to harm yourself or others and everyone is trying to figure out how to live with this reality. There are moments where this book really reminds me of Station Eleven because overall it is about humanity and the will to survive.
