This is one of very few books that I finished and immediately turned over and began again. I found Cath's difficult transition to college and her estrangement from her sister painfully accurate, as is her difficulty connecting with people or trusting them. I learned a lot about fan culture and fan fiction, too, and I was swept up in the parallel narrative for Simon Snow as I read to find out what would happen next for Cath. Levi, too, became one of my favorite male characters / love interests in ...more

Rainbow Rowell has a knack for creating characters you want to know in real life, and I liked spending time with them. "Fangirl" is less complex and weighty than "Eleanor & Park" (which is in contention for the Best Book I Read in 2013). The stakes are low, somehow -- but pleasantly so.

Introverted Cath is going to college with her twin sister, Wren, but she has no interest in the normal college activities like Wren does. Cath is perfectly happy to sit in her room all day and write fanfiction on Simon Snow, her favorite fantasy novel series. In her fanfiction, Cath is witty, outgoing, brazen, and brave, but in real life, Cath has no idea how to interact with other people, including the handsome boyfriend of her roommate, Levi.

Alright, alright, I yield. This book is awesome. The

I started this as an audiobook and I was loving it, loving it too much, I didn't have enough places to drive so after searching my second library, I had already left the one I work at for the week, I got the book this morning and had to finish it!

I want to live in Rainbow's books, I want to be her characters, I want to fall in love for the first time all over again like they do!

I love how real and frustrating and beautiful her characters are. I like that they are relatable how they make me a 38

This is a little tough to rate, because while I didn't think this was a bad story or poorly written book (on the contrary; I understand why people love this) it was just not my cup of tea. ...more
