If you were to ask me at the very moment who my favorite working author is, it's very likely I'd say Daniel José Older. Putting aside his thoughtful, vocal, totally unafraid public voice on incredibly important issues, the man writes like a goddamn miracle. Shadowshaper was easily one of the best YA books of 2015 (and, to my mind, perhaps the most important), and Half-Resurrection Blues simply confirms his remarkable gift for voice and place. This book was so much fun. It was the exact palate cleanser I needed after the last depressing book I read. I love the way Older writes supernatural Brooklyn, and he writes women so, so well.

I felt Carlos and the plot were both pretty dull, but Older can also write some lovely prose here and there.
