I really, really wanted to like this book. Maybe I was disappointed because I was expecting a memoir, but after the first few childhood and early career anecdotes the book takes a turn toward list format, and for the most part, her lists just aren't very funny. The worst offenders are the lists of advice, which tend to reiterate tired stereotypes about men or specific racial/ethnic groups.

I inhaled this in one day.
She gets props for having an expected after-college apartment, as in something terrible and way out in Brooklyn and NOT a one-bedroom in Union Square where she doesn't pay rent.
She's very funny and smart which will trot out certain feelings from yourself. Part of me feels like I am the comedy nerd friend she only talks to on Saturdays who finds her totally fantastic and then after I walk away, I think "wait, she didn't ask me one question." Mindy Kaling, acerbic writer/actress of "The Office" offers a memoir of her career as a comedy writer, as well as her hilariously honest observations on life.
I enjoyed this. I didn't like it as much as "Bossypants", nor did I laugh out loud as much, but it was a fun read. Admittedly, it did take me a few weeks to read this, as I had to keep putting it down. Sorry, Mindy. ...more

After listening to Bossypants, I was pretty sure audio was the only way to go with this one. Might not be enjoyable for anyone who isn't familiar with The Office or some of her pop culture references, but I loved the way her passion for comedy came through.

quick, funny read by the delightful Mindy Kaling. Like Becky, one of my favorites chapters is "Married People Need to Step It Up". In particular the comment about one spouse not being allowed to watch certain tv shows without the other person, because Tim and I totally do that. Currently those shows are Breaking Bad, and Glee.
I also really enjoyed the section about her photo shoot for People's Most Beautiful list, because she is not a size 0 (nor should she be) and she totally made the costume ...more

Made me laugh pretty consistently, so for that I give it all five stars. Liked this better than Tina Fey's Bossypants which got much more hype.

I'm a big Mindy Kaling fan, so while this isn't my usual style of book I had to try it. Well worth it! A collection of essays & lists, it's funny & made me like her even more. A great, fun read.

Mindy, Mindy! Usually I roll my eyes at this kind of book, but I came out of this just wanting to be Mindy Kaling's best friend.

Reading this was delightful. I (and probably everyone else who's read this and liked it) want to be Mindy Kaling's friend.
