My favorite of the series so far, and that's saying a lot!! I LOVED Truth or Beard. Who knew Cletus had such a soft center, gah! Melted my heart. So sweet and tender.

I’m going to start this review with a quick reminder that I love all things Penny Reid. I just can’t help myself. This puts me into the awkward reviewer category of someone with “fan goggles.” With that said, my enthusiasm is only a modest amount above the average, or non-goggled, level of appreciation. Science told me so. Therefore, you can totally trust me on this: You need Cletus in your life. More specifically, you need Cletus in love with Jenn in your life.

I have to say, this is my favorite of the series so far. (I do have a soft spot for books with food and Jennifer is a pastry chef after all.)
So imagine how happy I was when I found out Cletus and Jennifer are getting their own spin-off series!! *insert awkward happy dance here*

Where to begin with this book? If you follow Penny Reid you know this has been one of her most anticipated books. The opportunity to get inside Cletus's mastermind head? Please! I've been wanting to dive into that brain since Beauty and the Mustache.

And Jennifer, the least likely candidate for anyone's love interest with her extreme awkward and her plastic exterior. Who knew what she was thinking behind those beautiful eyes?

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who reads my blog or visits my Facebook blog page that I’m a Penny Reid fanatic. I bow down to her storytelling prowess…her ability to infuse such varying personalities into her characters…her willingness to go against the grain and create highly intelligent, quirky, and richly dense heroes and heroines. There is no other writer like Penny Reid, and I don’t think there ever will be because she demonstrates how right and left brained she is with her scientific It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who reads my blog or visits my Facebook blog page that I’m a Penny Reid fanatic. I bow down to her storytelling prowess…her ability to infuse such varying personalities into her characters…her willingness to go against the grain and create highly intelligent, quirky, and richly dense heroes and heroines. There is no other writer like Penny Reid, and I don’t think there ever will be because she demonstrates how right and left brained she is with her scientific intellect as well as her creative use of diction and her meticulously, character-driven storylines.

I’ve read almost every single one of Reid’s books, and I’ve loved them all, but there’s just something about these Winston brothers. They are quite the eclectic group of men and Penny Reid does a fantastic job of illustrating their individual nuances. Since being introduced to Ashley’s brothers, I’ve become almost fixated on Cletus. His wit, his oddities, and his covert meddling are the characteristics that set him apart from the rest of his brethren, and it’s those ideas that endear him to me. His scientific approach to interacting with people and his ability to cleverly manipulate situations without people realizing what he’s doing is masterful – it’s a true art form that he seems to patent all on his own – at least he did until the one person who he’s never truly seen pulls one over of him and blackmails him into doing her bidding for once, which, in the end, actually seems to be for both of them.

Like Cletus, Jennifer Sylvester is quite the scientific guru; in fact, many aspects of her life revolve around rational acts and require a deliberate approach, more so to appease her parents than anything else but Jennifer still understands the role she is to play and works with precise care in order to create the superficial caricature of a southern woman – the persona that her mother expects her to never delineate from regardless of who she’s with or where she finds herself.

But if anyone took the time to truly see Jennifer…to look beyond the well-coiffed hair and Banana Cake Queen nickname, they would see a 22 year-old sheltered and caged woman, who more than anything, craves love and attention for who she is NOT what she can create in a bakery.

But knowledge is power and Jennifer does what she has to do in order to get what she wants, and Cletus Winston is in for the shock of his life when it comes to who Jennifer Sylvester truly is, and by turning the tables on Cletus, Jennifer’s able to play the game just as good or maybe better than Cletus ever has, which is exactly what the controlled, sneaky man needs to help him focus on his own life instead of constantly meddling in his siblings’ lives.

Beard Science was a perfect story because all of Cletus’ hypotheses and conclusions were turned upside down due to one woman’s attempt to find herself and be set free from how the whole town views her. And, as Cletus learns who Jennifer truly is, readers do as well as, which helps us to recognize just how much Cletus and Jennifer complement one another and balance each other’s oddities.

Just like Cletus, there’s a method to Penny Reid’s madness and even though, at first, her pairings might not make sense to some readers, as soon as we’re allowed to investigate a bit more and truly understand the chemistry between the heroes and heroines, it’s more than clear that Reid’s conclusions are accurate and even perfect given her specimens and their attributes!

Avoiding the normal is beautiful

This is Penny Reid's "blue roses". She tells a tale with characters that make awkward and intelligence beautiful. Cletus and Jennifer are so divinely created that every emotion travels from the pages and into the reader's heart. The words are poetry. Heartbreak of Jennifer's acceptance of her life, her coping mechanisms against the bullies that are not capable truly seeing her, and the sheer joy of moments when she is brave enough to see herself...jeans, sneakers ...more

I've been looking forward to Cletus' story since Beauty and the Mustache. I think he was most of our favorites, so I commend the author for not saving his story for last. So many other authors would have just to keep people coming for a hint to where their favorite guy's story might head to.

It was cute, sweet, and "smart" just as you expect from a Reid book.

My one and only complaint is that it was a little pricier that I'd prefer. I get why it is the price it is. However, normally I still would ...more

Love. Love. Love this book. I was immersed in this book. All of the Penny Reid books that I have read so far are full of laugh out loud humour, and this was no exception. I've been looking forward to reading Cletus' story since we first met him in Duane's book Truth or Beard, and he did not disappoint. Cletus is a delightfully quirky character. He is a multifaceted character that reveals in manipulating everything and everyone. It was trul ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review.

As I said I fully expected to love the character of Cletus, but I hadn’t anticipated just how much I’d love Jennifer Sylvester. I have read numerous books where with such a well-developed, strong male lead; the female lead fades in comparison. As such, I didn’t expect much of The Banana Cake Queen… Oh how wrong I was! Jennifer is a true match for Cletus, both in the depth of her character and in her cleverness. Oh and she’s kinda sneaky too, though in her case it’s mainly accidental whereas Cletus cultivates his image in order to appear like a harmless hillbilly. I don’t know how I could’ve doubted Penny Reid’s skill, as her heroines are all fantastically funny and clever.

This was one of those rare few books where I couldn’t wait to pick it up again. When I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it, and I rushed through tasks in order to be able to pick it up again. I truly loved this book! I loved Cletus. I loved Jennifer. I loved the glimpses of the previous couples from the previous books and their lives. I loved getting more of an insight into the character of Billy. This book made me laugh, and made me feel all those gooey feelings that you can only get from a fantastic romance; and I’m just really sad that I’m finished reading it. I want more. I can’t wait for Beard in Mind. If you haven’t read Penny Reid before, you NEED to start, and if you haven’t read the Winston Brothers what are you waiting for? This book is seriously good. Seriously.

I have been looking forward to Cletus Winston and his famous sausage for a very...very...long time. And once again Penny Reid pulls it out of the hat with that quirky touch of humour that she is famous for.

A while ago she let us read a snippet from her work in progress and that had me thinking all sorts of wrong things about who would capture the attention of the sneaky sneak that is Cletus. Cletus! Cletus! Cletus!

We love you Cletus!!!! There is nothing better than the Winston Brothers series. Who's my favorite Winston brother? So far Duane, Jethro, and Cletus!
If you haven't read anything from Penny Reid please do so now, she is a super smart, talented author. I have never been disappointed with anything that I have read from this author.
