Oh Cletus.

Beard Science is his story. While this book can absolutely be read as a stand alone, I recommend that you start with Beauty & the Mustache, then move onto the other books in The Winston Brothers series, so that you are able to fully embrace the "Cletus experience." Because Cletus is not just any book hero - Cletus is a force of nature.

(And on a side note - you really need to read all of Penny Reid's books because they are all absolutely WONDERFUL, fun reads)

Cletus is generally always working on a ... plan of some kind. Generally, he doesn't tell his siblings about any of the details of a "work in progress" and they usually find out when the results become apparent. Cletus is working on a plan and unknowingly involves Jennifer.

Jennifer is the local Banana Cake Queen. Her parents have pushed her superior talents as a baker to the extreme; she works tons of hours at all times of the day making baked goods in their shop, her mother has made her the queen of social media, and is determined to put Jennifer in the limelight. In a nutshell, she's driving Jennifer crazy, so... Jennifer decides that she needs Cletus's help.

Ooohh this book. I totally loved it; and quite frankly, Cletus has always been my favorite. All the brothers have their own quirks and charm, but there is something about Cletus that, even though he isn't "real", that I feel drawn to. Probably that whole "bad boy who needs a good girl to love him" thing? No. That isn't it. Cletus is smart, funny, and a mystery. You can't help but be drawn to him...even as a reader to a fictional character.

I loved Jennifer and could feel total empathy for her while dealing with an overbearing mother and an uncaring father. To see her come out of her shell and stand up for herself was, at times, heart breaking but also inspiring.

Once again, I feel inadequate as a reviewer when it comes to expressing everything I love in particular about a certain book. All I can say is I loved and thoroughly enjoyed reading Cletus and Jennifer's story.

I love Cletus and Jenn!

I was kinda worried about how I'd react to Cletus's odd personality after my first impression of him in the novels about his brothers. But Ms. Reid wrote him very well and gave all of the chapters from his perspective good detail about how his mind worked and why he was the way he was. Clever and diabolical doesn't even begin to describe tha "How could I have disregarded her? How could I have looked at her with anything but wonder and respect and desire?" - Cletus Winston

I love Cletus and Jenn!

I was kinda worried about how I'd react to Cletus's odd personality after my first impression of him in the novels about his brothers. But Ms. Reid wrote him very well and gave all of the chapters from his perspective good detail about how his mind worked and why he was the way he was. Clever and diabolical doesn't even begin to describe that man's mind! But he's also loving, gentle, fiercely loyal, and protective. I could totally fall for a man just like him.

Jenn was surprisingly, a great heroine! She was the complete opposite of the previous book's heroine. Invisible and pushover were words used to describe her. My impression of her from the other books was less than stellar. Fortunately for us, Penny Reid knew what she was doing!!! Once inside Jenn's head, I could see who she was and I understood her. And once she was paired with Cletus, oh man! He brought out all the best in her! And vice versa. That's what a couple should do for each other. Make each other the best versions of themselves.

I think that the mall scene is probably now one of my all time favorite book scenes ever! I love it when a big, strong man comes to the defense of his woman. It was brilliant!

When the big climax of the story happened, I was thankful that it wasn't drug out for a super long time. I liked that when Cletus made a decision about something, he was ready to admit his feelings, accept them, do what he needed to do and move on. It really moved the story along at a nice pace.

Side note, I'm really enjoying the progression of the other Winston brothers as well. Billy was my least favorite brother when I started the series and now I can't wait to read his book!
Beau's book is next and his woman was introduced in this book, so I can't wait! I still don't know much about Roscoe, the youngest brother, but I'm sure it'll be as good as the rest of the books!

You all know that I do not often review my reads. A book has to profoundly effect me in order to push my uneducated words into your field of vision. That being said, this is HANDS DOWN the BEST Penny Reid novel I have read since Neanderthal Seek's Human. I see pieces of myself (and some of my minions) in Cletus and Jennifer. I love this book! Cletus is a wonderfully flawed character who embraces his devious nature and does everything within his power to ensure things come out in accordance with his plans. He is intelligent and relies upon his observations and understandings of others. I love that the female lead, Jennifer, is someone who he misjudged and underestimated. I love the feeling of surprise. Favorite couple so far! Jen and Cletus are perfect!! Cletus is so clever. Thinks of everything. Loved seeing Jenn stand up for herself multiple times. Can’t wait to read more.

I have been binging this series and it is pure fun, even for someone who cannot abide facial hair. Those Winston boys are irresistible, but Cletus is without a doubt my favorite.
