I wasn't convinced by the premise of this novel, and was really dubious about the idea of going back to the world of The Shining - it's such an amazing book, there's no way a sequel could live up to it, right? I'm grateful the movie was made, because the trailer convinced me to read it. And it's great, a really excellent follow up on Danny's adult life with a well developed, fascinating look at how having the shine has played it for other people. Classic Stephen King. Couldn't put it down once I started reading it. So very good and even if you haven't read The Shining, you can mostly follow along. You will probably miss a few references but still a very good story without knowing any of the history. ...more

It's been a long time since I've read a Stephen King novel that I am referred to as a 'Constant Reader'. That brings me back many, many years to when I had a voracious appetite for anything King wrote and not much room for anything by anyone else. As I get older, my tastes have changed but I now must go back and reread The Shining and get reacquainted with the Torrance's. This was a great, creepy, unsettling book, typical of a King read. Stephen King does it again! I loved this sequel to The Shining. I still don't understand how he gets these uber-dark ideas... but I love that about this book. I particularly enjoyed that the main character struggles with addiction, but rises above it to help a teenage girl who is a lot like him. Excellent book--I highly recommend it. ...more
