What Members Thought

This is a historical fiction book based on the leper’s colony in Hawaii in the early 1900. A daughter is forced to leave her family at age 8 and spend her life there. I love reading about places while you are there. We are currently vacationing in Hawaii and this was the perfect book for me. Amazing descriptions of the land, information on native Hawaiian traditions and stories, all while telling the life of Rachel.

A sisters’ squabble and angry words: “You dirty leper!” have tragic consequences. Her loving family is torn apart and the little girl is sent off alone to spend her life among other lepers on the beautiful, but remote island of Molokai. Her life there, and the extended family “ohana,” which embrace her make for a novel that is surprisingly joyous, even though there is the constant presence of a devastating disease. There is much sadness, but so much love.

Goodreads needs to add half star options. If they did, I would give this 2.5 stars but I rounded up. The book was just ok in my opinion. It was a decent story and it did inspire me to do research on the leper colony in Hawaii so the subject matter was interesting.

I really liked this book. It was very interesting following the main characters through her life and the different stages of emotions. It opened my eyes to an era in Hawaii that I was not aware of in history. I would definitely recommend this book by Alan Brennert. I liked it so much that I read his next book, Honolulu, which was excellent also.

One of my favorite books ever. Despite so much sadness, the main character's core is one of optimism.
