I knew next to nothing about the hard scrabble life of small farmers in South Africa. This is a funny, tough, and tender evocation of Ms. Fuller's family and upbringing, and good enough to reread. So I did reread it. This is a family with parents wealthy in inner resources, adventurous and capable, but still . . . The very hard circumstances of their lives, coupled with conflict and war and economic uncertainty and personal tragedy -- Fuller narrates all this so beautifully, with zero self-pity.
