What Members Thought

I finished this book in tears, but they weren't tears of sadness; not happiness either. I was in tears because I had no other way to deal with the rich and bittersweet beauty of this book. I adored every page as a chance to spend a little more time with Francie and her broken, brave, struggling, strong family, doing their best in a world that takes all it can and gives very little back. I'm sorry that it took me so long to read this, but now that I have, I'm a better reader for it.

This is an amazing book! It's an "almost" boring story of a young child, into a young woman, and her life with her family in Brooklyn in the early 20th century. Almost ... except for all the lovely word feasts (lovely description of a starlit night over Brooklyn), beautiful descriptions of the people and places, and the simple philosophical lessons, such as "let me be SOMETHING every minute of every hour of my life". This is one of the books I must have read in high school (though it's possible I read it in middle school; there's no indication of year, but since there are a couple of highlights, it must have been for school). I remembered nothing about it, which made it fun.
