What Members Thought

I finished this book in tears, but they weren't tears of sadness; not happiness either. I was in tears because I had no other way to deal with the rich and bittersweet beauty of this book. I adored every page as a chance to spend a little more time with Francie and her broken, brave, struggling, strong family, doing their best in a world that takes all it can and gives very little back. I'm sorry that it took me so long to read this, but now that I have, I'm a better reader for it.

*An update to my last review, because I just finished another reread while I'm on my way to Brooklyn to do a little walking tour of Francie's neighborhood. Still my favorite book of all time, and preparing to be weepy as I get to see the school, the library, the house, and the neighborhood Francie would have grown up in! Love this book so much ❤️*

This is one of the books I must have read in high school (though it's possible I read it in middle school; there's no indication of year, but since there are a couple of highlights, it must have been for school). I remembered nothing about it, which made it fun.
Every once in a while, I struggle to find a book with strong, inspiring (though flawed) characters. This book was perfect for that sensation. There was not a character in here that I didn't like, which isn't necessarily relevant. But I lo ...more
