*An update to my last review, because I just finished another reread while I'm on my way to Brooklyn to do a little walking tour of Francie's neighborhood. Still my favorite book of all time, and preparing to be weepy as I get to see the school, the library, the house, and the neighborhood Francie would have grown up in! Love this book so much ❤️*

I think I stumbled onto this book because it was referenced in another book. I'm so glad I listened to this on audio because the narrator was really able to bring the story together. This book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, is a moving and intimate story of how one girl, Francie Nolan, grows up in Brooklyn, New York. Well, the borough called Williamsburg. I really wanted to like this — it’s an American classic, after all. But I got almost 100 pages in and I just didn’t care at all. There’s no plot, nothing to “hope for” or care about. I almost feel guilty for being bored out of my mind by this book, but there it is. I was bored out of my mind. I am starting something else.... sigh. Sorry, Betty Smith.
