Synopsis:
The Final Empire is ruled by an immortal and powerful being who is known as the Lord Ruler. Like most triangular social hierarchies, those at the bottom are often taken advantage of by those at the top. Most of the skaa live miserable lives with survival as their main goal. One of those skaa is Vin, a 16-year-old girl. And her life is about to turn upside down when she meets her new Mistborn mentor, Kelsier.

What I thought:
Amazing. AMAZING! I follow a lot of fantasy book reviewers and this is almost always on their favorites list. After just reading the first few chapters, I can understand why. Reading this was pure escapism for me. It brought me back to when I was a kid and just enjoyed the story without trying to take notes, or be analytical, or think about my reading goals and challenges for the month. I just read because the story was so good.

The action scenes were fun to imagine since the magic system was pretty unique. There was an impressive explanation to the magic. The side characters were funny and interesting. The villain was… I thought he was just right. The perfect balance of mysterious, powerful, and unexpected.

I don’t have any criticisms for this that are worth mentioning. I rated this 5 stars, and after reading Book 2, The Well of Ascension, added it to my favorite series and added Sanderson as one of my favorite authors.

Who should read this: New or old fantasy fans. I’ve read fantasy for years, but only read this now. I still really enjoyed it. At the same time, the story and writing are easy enough to follow for even new fantasy fans, or those who want to start getting into the genre. ...more

This was my introduction to Sanderson, and I can say I was impressed.

I enjoyed Sanderson's take on magic, the premise behind the use of metals is an intriguing concept. His characters are charismatic and likable, though I, personally, would have liked to hear a bit more about their backgrounds. Maybe that comes in later books in the series?
