This story went a far different direction than I originally expected when I checked it out. Unfortunately, it just never really made me excited to keep going. If it hadn't been an audiobook, I most likely would have given up on it. But since I was just listening while doing other work, it did stick it out. The ending wasn't completely happy but did have some redemption for the story. ...more

Suspenseful, sensual and well written, yet the plot was flawed and much too long. For one thing, while the detectives knew about Lilian's partying at Netty's, why didn't they question some of the revelers? Ewan, for one, would have remembered Frances and Lil and what 'good time girls' they were. And the jig would have been up.

The novel's setting in the London suburbs ca.1922 following WWI was hard-bitten and entrenched in Victorian thinking that still predominated. Only through Frances, Lilian
