This book was such a weird experience to me -I was, for so long, super excited for this release and just the idea of what the story was going to be like. And it was good but it turned out not what I expected.
Here we have Marissa Meyer, a fantastic writer who is more than capable of delivering a cohesive and beautiful story, and she does that in Heartless. Well, sort of. I truly loved Heartless, for about the first 78% of the whole book because then it went south pretty bad in my opinion.

I started this book hesitant knowing that there was no way that it could end well. And that if I let myself get caught up with characters or too hopeful with a happy ending, I would feel heartbroken at the end. But I did...and I do.
I enjoyed this spin on the Red Queen's life before she became the red queen. I also liked the characters and the world that we were in. I saw many throw backs to the original story as well as some similarities to anther Alice retelling I am quite fond of. There were ...more

I didn't care for this book much at all. And I wish I could liked it more.
The only reason it got 3 stars is because I did like the descriptive words of a familiar tale.
However, even my thought of primarily liking this book was overshadowed by the fact that I couldn't stand Catherine, the main character. I felt like she was spoiled, petty, and really just a third rate character. I also didn't care for her constant belittling of other characters, as though she was so much better. Um, no?

I think Marissa Meyer does a great job with writing villain backstories. However, I did not enjoy this one as much as I did Fairest. Cath was a bit of a whiny character, though I did like her dedication to her goals. I loved her much more at the end, once she'd fully come into her Queen of Hearts persona. The rest of the book was just kinda boring and drawn out. I'm not a fan of Alice in Wonderland, so the whimsy of the world was lost on me. It's pretty much Jest, Cheshire, and the ending that m

I really enjoyed this novel! I've seen the Alice in Wonderland movies, but I have never actually read the books. However, Marissa Meyer's retelling gave me a new appreciation for the story. It was a very cleverly written book!
