Sebastian takes on another puzzling and gruesome case at the behest of Magistrate Lovejoy. Young men are being murdered, their bodies brutally treated with objects placed in their mouths. The case takes him down interesting and surprising paths.

This story is the best yet, written nimbly but without sacrificing the author's extraordinary skill in descriptively creating a strong sense of time, place and social atmosphere. I felt like I could see, feel and smell early 19th century London. The case

Three and a half stars

Ah, this was a tough one to rate for me. On the one hand, the murder mystery was interesting as this time around Sebastian finds himself on the hunt for a serial killer. The murders themselves are disturbing as is the story behind the killer's driving motivation. Secondary characters like Earl Hendon, Paul Gibson, and Lord Jarvis continue to add much appreciated flavor to the telling and Sebastian's interactions with them, however brief, usually give at least some clues to

Why Mermaids Sing
4 Stars

Local Magistrate Henry Lovejoy seeks the aid of Sebastian St. Cyr when the sons of several prominent families are found viciously butchered. Skilled at ferreting out the truth, Sebastian’s investigation exposes a deadly web of lies that someone is willing to kill to keep secret.

A rather straightforward serial killer mystery set in Regency England. Nevertheless, the aspects of the case make for gripping reading and the twists and turns in Sebastian’s personal life are ver

Oh Sebastian! I can't believe the author went "there". Wow. Just know you'll survive this and move on. I loved Why Mermaids Sing! What a wild, insane, twisted story that put characters (and this reader) through h*ll. This is one of the best historical suspense series I've read. I'm moving on to the next book. Sebastian needs me. ;) ...more

Why Mermaids Sing is the third book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series by C. S. Harris. Sebastian St. Cyr is the Viscount Devlin and heir to the Earl of Hendon. Despite his aristocratic lineage, Sebastian finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation.

He is asked to assist by his friend, Magistrate Henry Lovejoy, after a body is found in a public location in London. This is the second body in as many months that has been “butchered” after death. The body is that of a nobleman’s son which is

Perhaps 4.5 stars.

This series definitely must be read in order, at least through Book #3, which this is.

Gruesome crimes; rude surprises.

RATING: 4 STARS

If the first two novels don't say gritty, Why Mermaids Sing lets you know that this is not a cozy mystery. The tone and writing is reminiscent of Thomas Harris's eery and haunting prose. (Ha, just realized they both have the surname of Harris...coincidence?). Sebastian's relationship with Kate does give it a better balance with the darkness. With the third book, I definitely became a fan and was down for the rest of the series, no matter how many books. The writing and story keeps

I love this book and the series. It is interesting on so many levels.

The characters are captivating to say the least. I'm getting very attached to Tom. He is becoming like a surrogate son to Sebastian. His interactions with Sebastian add another level to the story. I can't wait to get to the next book, unfortunately I have to read a couple others first.

This is the third book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series. C.S. Harris is an excellent writer and had me hooked from beginning to end. The series is very atmospheric of the dark underside of Regency London. The plot is flawlessly constructed with lots of twists and turns. The characters are all well-drawn. The good ones you will love and the bad ones you will learn to hate. I am looking forward to the next book and I highly recommend this series to those who like historical fiction, romance and mys ...more
