The Bachelor Meets the Hunger Games: A Must Read for Anyone Who Loves Reality Shows and Dystopian YA Romances!

The Elite is the second book in the Selection Series. The Selection Trilogy is a dystopian, young adult trilogy, like the Hunger Games and the Divergent Trilogies, with all of the sinful pleasure of watching a Reality TV Show! The Elite is the second book in the Selection Series. The Selection Trilogy is a dystopian, young adult trilogy, like the Hunger Games and the Divergent Trilogies, with all of the sinful pleasure of watching a Reality TV Show! Without disputing the symbolism or value of the Elite as literature, I will just say that I found the Elite to be an incredibly fun and entertaining listen and couldn't put my earphones down!

Set in the future, The Selection Trilogy takes place in a fictional time when all persons are classified by a rigid number caste system with 1 being the highest/best and 8 being the lowest. In this world, a person's caste determines everything from the person's possible occupations to the person they can marry. Amidst this backdrop, Prince Maxim comes of age and is ready to marry. To find his bride, 35 girls are supposedly randomly selected from the kingdom to compete in The Selection in which he will choose his bride. While this is potentially a dream come true for any girl, the one girl in the kingdom who does not wish to be chosen is America Singer. America is secretly in love with Aspen. However, as America is a 5 (artists/musicians of a poor class) and Aspen, a 6 (an even poorer class; members of which typically work as servants) it is a forbidden love which America and Aspen maintain hidden. Aspen, however, wishing a better life for America, encourages her to enter her name in the lottery for The Selection and she is selected as one of the 35 contestants. Prior to leaving for the Selection, Aspen severs all ties with America. Nonetheless America arrives heartbroken and from the very beginning tells Prince Maxim that she will never love him, but offers him friendship instead. As Prince Maxim's and America's friendship builds over the course of the Selection, America learns that irrespective of their intentions, both Prince Maxim and America have developed romantic feelings for each other. Then to America's surprise Aspen shows up as one of the Royal Family's guards (having been drafted into the military which automatically elevates him to a class 2 caste). Thus begins the love triangle!

At the beginning of the Elite, there are just 6 girls left in the selection. With a more manageable number of girls left, the royal family starts to interact more with the remaining contestants. As a result, we get a better view into who the royal family really is and what they stand for. The Elite also has a somewhat serious tone as America begins to learn what it means to be a princess and the good and the bad of having such a position of influence. Amidst this experience, the love triangle also continues. There are constant twists and turns and Ms. Cass constantly leaves you questioning who American will ultimately choose. We also get--and Prince Maxim gets--a closer look at the remaining contestants, including their motivations and Prince Maxim begins to change his approach with respect to certain of the contestants, further leaving the reader to question whether America is truly the one he will ultimately choose.

All in all, the Elite has some great romantic tension and the suspense is nicely layered to keep the reader interested in finding out who Prince Maxim, and America, will ultimately choose for their future. I am eagerly awaiting the last installment of this trilogy which is expected to be released in May of this year.

Narration: Amy Rubinate, the narrator of The Selection, comes back to narrate The Elite, and does another fantastic job with the narration. She brings the characters to life by providing equally good, age appropriate voices for both the female and male characters. Additionally, Ms. Rubinate does a fantastic job of keeping a subject appropriate pace to the narration which really adds to the drama and suspense, as well as, romantic tension of The Elite. All in all, I give Ms. Rubinate 5-stars for the narration of The Elite which truly adds to the total experience!

Thought I might enjoy this series more if I read book 2, but I was mistaken. The constant back and forth between two suitors and the lack of confidence in her own worth make for a very tiresome main character. The world of Ilea is not as fully developed as it could be, making for what seems like a first draft. Deliberately ending each book with a cliff hanger and filling the books with so much back and forth makes it seem as if this trilogy could have been written as 1 novel instead of 3.
