The long wait is over and I liked it! I see the reviews are very mixed. Perhaps because of the Scottish challenge group I'm in, I see much of the Isabel Dalhousie series(I have read 7 of those and I'm getting ready to read #8) in this retelling. Some really good twists to the original Emma. Less satisfying are parts of the ending/one important storyline. On par with Modern Jane Austen project #2(Val McDermid's Northanger Abbey), and miles ahead of #1(by she who must not be mentioned). 4.25 out o ...more

Ero sicura che Alexander McCall Smith avrebbe fatto un ottimo lavoro, lasciando inalterati i caratteri dei personaggi austeniani, pur trasponendoli in chiave moderna e, in effetti, sotto questo punto di vista, il romanzo non mi ha affatto delusa.
Per tutta la prima parte del romanzo, si può dire che il protagonista è stato Mr. Woodhouse piuttosto che sua figlia Emma. Il nostro ipocondriaco amico, con la sua mania di vivere sano, riesce ad arrivare a estremi che neanche il suo omonimo austeniano.. ...more

Alexander Mccall Smith ha scritto una buona versione di Emma, ma non abbastanza buona.

Pur apprezzando lo stile dello scrittore, l'ambientazione di questo romanzo mi ha lasciato perplessa.. Non è solamente grazie al termine "moderno" nel titolo che ho capito l'ambientazione di questo romanzo, tuttavia continuando nella lettura avrei potuto tranquillamente immaginare di ritrovarmi nel 1800 per poi essere ricapultata nei tempi moderni. 3.5 Stars. I enjoyed it but it felt a bit rushed in the end. It follows much of the plot of the original, but there were some key scenes left out and not enough of Mr. Knightley. Smith does a faithful job of showing Emma's snobbishness and interference, matchmaking and otherwise. Miss Taylor is delightful and Mr. Woodhouse is every bit the hypochondriac, though a well-informed one. Jane Fairfax is reserved and Miss Bates is not. Parts of this I liked more than a little.
Parts of this were rather ... strange.
As a whole, it's an interesting modernization of my beloved EMMA, but I wouldn't say it's my favorite. ...more
