To read "Jane Eyre" is to be Jane Eyre. And to be thankful that she has a disciplined heart, good sense, and a couple strokes of deserved good luck. I loved the plot, the drama, the characters, and the language, such as the now obsolete words and spellings like “to drear” as a verb, or “doat” for “dote.” Also the writing was wonderful, expansive but never too much, using description but always keeping to the plot. Take, for example, the typhoidal dew...

I think that it's important to read this book in the context of the time in which Bronte wrote it, which is why I gave it 5 stars. February 2024 - This is my third reading of Jane Eyre, and it continues to be my favorite Bronte novel. No doubt this is a novel of well-recognized literary value. Although I can readily admit its quality, I can’t say I enjoyed it. Maybe it was my mood. But, I found the writing style excessively wordy; similes added to similes, descriptions that bogged down the narrative. Reading this felt a bit like swimming through molasses, very rich, but quite a slow trudge. This book has such prominence in the western canon that I knew the story even though I had not yet read it. Because of that, the plot hel
