Luminous prose. My advice is you walk barefoot through it. Even if you didn't like something else of his, read this one if you enjoy excellent writing. The story is good, too.

Quirky love story set in 19th century England and Australia. Oscar Hopkins is an unworldly English clergyman with a fear of water, Lucinda Leplastrier is an Australian heiress with a glassworks in Sydney, and they share a passion for gambling. Their relationship is beset by misogyny, religious hypocrisy, scheming adventurers and their own misunderstandings of each other.
