In this second volume of Proust's masterpiece, the narrator feels the pain of first love and writes about his favourite themes of love, memory, and art. The first section of the novel is set in Paris, where the narrator spends time with Gilberte Swann. In the second part, he journeys to the seaside resort of Balbec with his grandmother, and makes a number of new friends.
