What Members Thought
I loved the descriptions of the land throughout this book. The land is a character unto itself and forms the people into who they are. It’s harsh, embracing, beautiful and stark.
I read this book over 3 days; couldn’t wait to get back to it to find out what happens to Wayne, his parents and Thomasina; how they reconcile their guilt, uncertainty and come to terms with their true feelings.

I asked for this for Christmas after seeing it recommended somewhere. I knew it was about a hermaphrodite and yet when I got it I wondered if I really wanted to read a book about gender identity, since we seem unable to escape the topic these days. But I warmed up to the story and enjoyed the characters. The conflict of Wayne/Annabel seemed truly irreconcilable and the character was nothing if not sympathetic. The writing was also good as was the landscape of Labrador and its lifestyle.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book until the last few chapters. It just felt disconnected from the rest of the story.
