A wonderful, complex world in which Cazaril, who has been broken in mind and body, ends up tutoring the future queen of the land. A curse hangs over the family, and Cazaril both protects Iselle from nasty suitors, but also figures out and ultimately dispenses with the curse through his willingness to sacrifice himself. This book worked well for both me and Andy - it has adventure, love, political intrigue, fantasy elements (such as magic and saints), and a feel good ending despite no promises. V

Gosh, I just love the stories Lois tells. (Although perhaps I love them a bit TOO much - I stayed up way too late last night finishing this book!)
I was introduced to Lois's writing via the Vorkosigan series, and tend to be more of a Sci-Fi than Fantasy person, but this book just grabbed me and didn't let go.
