Like Rhett Butler I have a love-hate relationship with Scarlett O'Hara. I admire her for her strength and her honesty with herself. I dislike her for her self-centeredness, dishonesty with others, and cruelty to those around her. I enjoy historical fiction and this is one of the best I have read but it didn't quite live up to what I was expecting. Like it was written for a movie. The irony of Scarlett's situation wasn't lost on anyone who read the book. Listened to it from about 12:30 pm - 5:13 pm without stopping. It OBVIOUSLY needs some kind of modern take on it, but it's still a classic.

Reading this book has dramatically changed how I will think about literature, the art of writing, relationships, and the power of the will to overcome hardship. I'd like to say I'm a different man after reading this book. I suppose the proof will be shown in how I continue to live out my years.
