It never ceases to amaze me how these two authors manage to write one fantastic novel after another for their Agent Pendergast series. This latest novel is no exception. I was a little surprised, in a good way, at the beginning of the story when the murder victim is revealed. After all, the victim looked like a good candidate to replace Diogenes, the principle bad guy in several of their earlier novels. It will be interesting to see who takes that role in future novels. Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have written their latest edition of the Pendergast series especially for us lady fans. I say this because our hero in black, Aloysius Pendergast, is the victim in this novel and it is up to two female heroines to try to save him. For those long time fans of the series, you will recognize one of the heroines as Dr. Margo Green from earlier novels of the series, which includes Relic, Reliquary, The Book of the Dead, and Cemetery Dance and of course, Pendergast’s Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have written their latest edition of the Pendergast series especially for us lady fans. I say this because our hero in black, Aloysius Pendergast, is the victim in this novel and it is up to two female heroines to try to save him. For those long time fans of the series, you will recognize one of the heroines as Dr. Margo Green from earlier novels of the series, which includes Relic, Reliquary, The Book of the Dead, and Cemetery Dance and of course, Pendergast’s ward Constance Greene as the other heroine.

Pendergast’s troubles began when his evil son Alban shows up at his door. Being a long time Pendergast fan, I knew that Alban was going to eventually show up but what I didn’t expect was that he would show up dead. One would assume that this would give Pendergast a breath of relief, as Alban is, or should I say was, a considerable adversary for the very formidable Pendergast. But Pendergast is not one to let sleeping dogs lie, so he takes on another adventure by tracking down Alban’s murderer only to run into a whole lot of grief for his troubles.

Pendergast comes to the realization that he has been bested by a really evil enemy and frustratingly he doesn’t know who, why, or how. The seemingly indestructible Pendergast must now face the fact that his imminent fate is death. But Pendergast does not live in a vacuum and he is surrounded by people who care deeply for him that includes his familiar side-kick Vincent D’Agosta, Margo Green and Constance Greene. This merry trio isn’t about to give up on Pendergast and they will do whatever they must to save his life. Constance Greene, in particular, puts on a great performance, to the point you want to shout out, GO GIRL, GO!

For you science fans, Dr. Enoch Leng's cabinet of curosities is brought back into the limelight and we are introduced to an interesting acid known as triflic acid, and yes, it is a real acid.

Preston and Child definitely wrote this novel with their longtime fans in mind as they rely on considerable background from previous books. This will, of course, make it difficult for anyone deciding to read a Pendergast book for the first time. I would strongly suggest reading Relic, Cabinet of Curiosities, and the Helen Trilogy; Fever Dream, Cold Vengeance, and Two Graves, to get a good background before reading this book. For those of you who have kept up with the series, this novel will not disappoint.

Another masterpiece from the famous Preston/Child team! These guys are my absolute favorite authors! This storyline, just like their other books, has a unique theme. I love the oddities of their characters, as well as the spectacular creepy settings! I highly recommend this book to all thriller fans!

Im Getting a bit let down by these authors now. this character is progressively being ruined. i loved the first 4 books and then it has been a steady decline. they need to bring back more monsters like the relic or even just weird stuff like still life with crows. Sort it out you two.
