In her review, Ioana wrote:

...."The language is quite simple, which can be beautiful (read: Herman Hesse); however it comes off as quite redundant and sermonic. Every other sentence contains at least one reference to either "The Soul of the World", or "The Personal Legend", or "Follow Your Heart" with a big fat capital H. By the end of the novel I am skimming most passages.

The characters are flat (I didn't really "feel" them, what they were going through, and there was no character development),

A very beautiful way of elaborating one's view about the meaning of life. We all do it, intentionally or not, trying to find one's destiny, the purpose of living and Coelho did that poetically (if there's such word). I think Coelho is a master, a light worker who wants to share his journey in experiencing life. At first, I thought this is only about somenone's journey in realizing dream, but it's more to the journey into the soul. Coelho reminds me of others light workers such as Walsch, Byrne, ...more

It tells about the story of an Andalusian (Spanish) boy named Santiago. He chose to live as shepherd than a priest (a pastor). He wanted to travel and visit many cities as wanderer. He lived from selling sheep’s wool.
The story began when the shepherd by was sleeping under the sycamore tree near the small, left, broken church. He had strange dreams, two same dreams about a little boy who was playing with his sheep and told him about treasure and pyramid in Egypt. Then, in a town he used to sell h

This inspirational fable by Brazilian author and translator Coelho has been a runaway bestseller throughout Latin America. The charming tale of Santiago, a shepherd boy, who dreams of seeing the world, is compelling in its own right, but gains resonance through the many lessons Santiago learns during his adventures. He journeys from Spain to Morocco in search of worldly success, and eventually to Egypt, where a fateful encounter with an alchemist brings him at last to self-understanding and spir ...more

This book was mentioned to me a while back. I bought a copy and it sat on my shelf for at least a year or two. This summer I was looking for some books to take on a trip and this one caught my eye. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. It is a masterfully crafted allegory of life. This book was powerful to me because it came at time when I needed to feel that life was worth living again. This sweet story of a boy out to experience the best that life has to offer, finds that sometimes we ...more

overall, the book is good. you can simply read it quickly. the words are beautiful. it is quite weak on the plot although the message given from this book is amazing. i really love the quote of "when you want something, all of the universe will conspire to help you achieve it." honestly, i got the chill whenever i read that sentence. it gives me the kick to pursue my own dreams and not letting go of it. really, it's a wonderful thing paolo coelho has taught us.

Hype and brevity usually makes for a good dose of wisdom delivered in a punch. In the case of the Alchemist, all of Coelho's efforts to stir my inner spiritual self fell decisively short. There were so many references to "Personal Legends" and "Souls of Worlds" in capitalized formality that I thought he might have been better off introducing acronyms to save paper. On the bright side, he reaches out in the form of a simple fable that cries out for adorning illustrations. Some other reviews menti ...more

actually, I bought the book on CD and listened to it on a late night rental car drive from hot and humid Austin Texas to... hot and humid Dallas, in October 06.

Jeremy Irons' surprisingly engaging British narration of Coelho's story had me vividly imagine the young boy's adventure and life lessons as he roamed the sheephearding country sides of Andalusia's southern Spain, got stuck in the crystal store in Tangiers, Morocco, made the camel journey across the North-African desert to finally arrive

it's about a journey of human being, to find our dreams by not following others and every little thing that happen has a purpose to our lives, whether realizing or not, God & the Universe will help us to achieve our will if we really want to.
this book is light, with simple & common language & we can feel the boy's feeling in his adventure by the author's writing. Nice book for everyone. I've heard it from early yr 2000, but I never courious about it until my boss recommend it...hehehe...so from

"When you aspire for something with passion, all the universe conspires to make it happen."

To believe the above is to know that this universe is alive, all of its individual parts, and all the parts collectively. A quick read with lasting impact. Put down your iPods and seek to have your breath taken away. Depth of plot and character, scenery, imagery, and the invocation of much that our so called advanced times have either forgotten or incorrectly deemed folly make this a must read for anyone f

I was actually a little apprehensive about reading this book. It looks like one of those that they make you read in school and you just want to fall asleep reading it or go to sparknotes and have it over with.

My friend recommended and I recommended her a book so I read it and was surprised. It is one of those deep books, but I think it has a good message and is easy to read once you get into. I am now thankful for what I have even though all I do is complain about what I don't have, but I am te
