I first heard of this book when Starbucks highlighted it as their featured book awhile ago. I have been wanting to read it ever since.

I enjoyed the book, but it was a difficult to read about all the violent and tragic events that took place. Beah is an amazing storyteller and has remembered many details about his life running from the war and then participating in it. This was tough to read. When I started reading it, I had to keep stopping because it was just so brutal and unflinching. And just as I thought a happy ending was in the offing, more fighting happened around Ishmael. Clearly I knew that ultimately there was a happy ending but in the meantime it was just unbelievably horrific and I wasn't sure if I could get through it.

This was a very interesting book - not quite what I thought it would be. It was a sad story, but the way it was told, it was sad from "a distance". It didn't pull me into the author's life like "A Piece of Cake" did, which I just finished reading.

It makes one wonder what can really be done about all the civil wars being fought all over the world.
