Imagine that you are a seven year old boy in England, and that books are your refuge from a world without any friends (and a horrible sister). Then, one day, almost like a story from the very books you love, you discover that the 2 women and the eleven year old girl- the Hempstocks- living at the end of your lane are possessed with magical capabilities beyond your greatest imaginings; and through these powers, even forces that WOULD LOVE to destroy worlds can be beaten.

This is the premise of Gai

My first Gaiman, and I found it totally enjoyable and captivating. It was fantasy, in the vein of Rigg's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, beautifully constructed. I gladly surrendered my sense of disbelief and slipped into this world without any doubt.

In the wake of a boarder's suicide, a boy of six meets the girl from the farm at the end of the lane. He finds himself enmeshed in a world of monsters and wisdom and age old beings, and from this encounter comes great danger and an exp

What a fun fantasy but I felt the ending was weak.

OK, a bit overrated. It's not firmly within the "young adult" genre, but it's close. This wasn't one of the "teenagers on the verge of losing their virginity" coming of age stories (think: Dawson's Creek). It's ponds and lakes and death and recovering your story.

Best thing: THE WORM. Worth reading just for that business.
