I was going to give this a 3.5 but will leave it at 4 as the ending brought it up for me. This is a fantastic reading experience in terms of understanding the challenges of living in the remote Canadian wilderness at the turn of the century. I really enjoyed learning about the Indians and their culture and their relationships with the "white" settlers/trappers etc. I thought it was portrayed as mostly a positive and respectful one. At the turn of the century, life was much harder than it is today, partially because of the amount of untamed wilderness in this country. We often attribute a difficult life with sorrow and desperation, but this story portrays life in the north as a rewarding and happy one. It is based on the real-life experiences of Kathy Flannigan, a woman who met the authors and shared her story.

This book reminded me a lot of "These Is My Words" by Nancy Turner though sadly not nearly as well written. Though the time and the geography were different than Turner's book, the love story was there as well as the myriad of trials. Even though this book was nonfiction, it reads as fiction. It amazes me that one person can endure so much and still find joy in living. Great example for all of us. ...more
