Did she or didn’t she? That is the question that will keep readers on the edge of their seat until the final twists on the very last pages. Phillip Ashley was orphaned at a young age and raised in 19C Cornwall by his older cousin Ambrose. Health issues force Ambrose to spend time in warmer climates and he meets and marries a distant cousin Rachel, the widowed Countess Sangaletti. Daphne du Maurier can tell a story, that’s for sure.

Phillip Ashley was orphaned as a small child and adopted by his uncle, Ambrose Ashley. Early in the novel, Ambrose dies and his wife Rachel returns to the Ashley estate in England. Philip is heir of the estate while Rachel inherited nothing. At first, Philip is convinced Rachel was responsible for Ambrose’s death, but after meeting her he’s not so sure. A great, atmospheric gothic set in 1830s/1840s Cornwall. The narrator is almost too naive to be believed, but a good read in any event.
