I like Lyndsay Faye's historical novels -- her Dust and Shadows was a masterful turn the Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson tribute genre. This one is set in Manhattan at the turn of the 20th century and Faye's usual attention to vivid historical detail is evident here as she describes the lower depths of New York City society and the Copper Stars, the proto-police force, deployed to arrest and assist them.
