TO MANY, I WAS MYTH INCARNATE, the embodiment of a most superb legend, a fairy tale. Some considered me a monster, a mutation. To my great misfortune, I was once mistaken for an angel. To my mother, I was everything. To my father, nothing at all. To my grandmother, I was a daily reminder of loves long lost. But I knew the truth — deep down, I always did.
I was just a girl.

I was just a girl.
Ava Lavender was born in 1944 and in 2014, and after years or research of her past and her family tree, Ava shares with us her findings and the answers to the two question that have always haunted her. The questions that were born the moment she was born with wings.
Fate. Both my anguish and my solace. My escort and my cage.
First, don’t you just love the cover? It’s so beautiful, and believe me, so was the writing. I fell in love with it right away. I was laughing one moment and shuddering the next only to laugh at the very next moment (that is, until only a couple of chapters in-then it got bittersweet). Did anyone else felt like that? It was magical really. This wasn’t just Ava’s story, this was so much more, so many stories, and the transition from one to the other was so smooth and perfect. I went into this expecting a sweet YA contemporary with maybe a love interest (I go in blind usually) and was instead greeted by something much better, something homely, something weird, something sweet and bitter, something that made me smile but had me reaching for tissues more often that I thought possible (though this music might have something to add to it since it was just perfect with every page and scene: Your Hand In Mine (Goodbye) ). I never expected to develop such an amazing connection with this book. I rooted for so many characters and never completely lost a single one that I loved. I loved the diversity of the characters and the plot. I just didn’t want it to end. (view spoiler)[I loved the ending but I don’t think I had enough of this book. I wish we knew more about how Ava got all the research-we know how she got Nathaniel’s diary- since she says so in the prologue. I read the prologue again after finishing this. I wish I knew what René meant when he said he volunteered for whatever he was, and did it mean that so did his sisters? And why did Fatima stay and only leave in the end? I wanted good for Jack even in the end, but I know he got enough. He shouldn’t have gotten Viviane and she fit just right with Gabe. I loved him so much, and Rowe. I wondered why Ava said that being considered an angel was a misfortune for her and only in the end did I realise why. I came to love all three of them: Ava, Viviane, and Emilienne. I also liked Henry though I wish he had used some more words before the rain. I liked Emilienne’s father too. I think we never really got the answer to the question: Where did this strangeness come into this family? I wanted to know. (hide spoiler)]
This is one of my absolute favorites, and I’m gonna find myself a hardcopy and read this again and again and again. There wasn’t much of a climax if you go in finding one. It’s just a plain old story.
A day has passed since I wrote the above and the following, but there is a question or two haunting me which weren't answered. I'm gonna go write them in the last chapter's spoiler. I just had to take away start because of that :'(
My Thoughts as I Read:
Prologue:
(view spoiler)[Oh wow, I just love the story line. I went in blind so this is very good. She’s telling the story at the age of 70 then? (I had to check, since she was so different, I wondered if she was also immortal or something.) Why was being called an angel a misfortune? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 1:
(view spoiler)[Okay, I am loving the writing and the story. I felt extremely sad for Beauregard Roux. He died and no one found out, and everyone thought he ran away. I don’t get how Maman was disappearing; is it a metaphor? Symbolic? Was she simply getting weaker and dying? The family was strange indeed. And I was just so shocked at what Margaux did. Did she do it because she felt guilty for being with Lush? What happened to René was equally tragic. I think I liked their father the most. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 2:
(view spoiler)[Why didn’t Emilienne have a heart to give? Because her sister killed herself and she lost most of her family? Yeah, I guess. Whatever happened to Pierette? Was she the little canary? And if yes, then her mother actually disappeared slowly? I should have read the synopsis, or better yet, it should have been made clear! This is getting scary. They were always there. This sent some goosebumps my way. Half-way through the chapter I felt like crying (Damn, everyone is dying or suffering! And I have a soft track playing in the background which is just amplifying the effect.). I felt for Emilienne and her haunted life and her broken and suppressed heart. I wish she could have loved Conner, but then he died too and I realized she would have been more broke if she did open up her heart. In a way, I think she did. Connor… He loved his daughter so much, and when we were told about the twinge that shot down his arm, I knew he was a goner, but I just didn’t want that. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 3:
(view spoiler)[I’m just glad that her bakery finally worked. I wish somethings were more explained though. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 4:
(view spoiler)[This finally started to get a little sweet. I liked Jack until I realized he was a Griffith. I don’t want to lose the wild and unruly Viviane but I know we will. He’s gonna break her heart, isn’t he? I like how smoothly the story moved the focus from Emilienne to Viviane. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 5:
(view spoiler)[Men like John Griffith are so despicable. I hate what Jack is feeling because of him.
“So, see? I’m much more scarred than you’ll ever be. Probably always will be.”
I really ship these two a lot. Tell me Jack is Ava’s father; I feel like he might not be. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 6:
(view spoiler)[This was the sweetest little chapter. Oh, so little. I love them both, they are my favourite characters so far. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 7:
(view spoiler)[Distance did its work, didn’t it? But I think it can always work if both are consistent and determined to keep the relationship going. Guess he did find girls after all. I love the diversity of the characters. I love their different histories and personalities and nature. It was horrible what Gabe went through at just the age of 10. Of course he clung to his dead mom. And then at the age of just thirteen and then fifteen. I couldn’t hate Jack when he followed Viviane to the reservoir, but I really loved Gale. Did Gale take her home? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 8:
(view spoiler)[Jack was an idiot to have lost Viviane. An idiot. He left her because of a bloody reputation. He still loved her. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 9:
(view spoiler)[I cried constantly while reading this. She was so hopeless in that white dress. I never thought Jack would be the father and I never wanted him to be the father this way. Gabe is so good. I wish she could open her heart, but she also hid it like her mother. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 10:
(view spoiler)[I always liked Beatrix and she had the wrong notion of marriage. Did she leave him? How did he share her dreams? What did it mean that EVERY night she left? Did she stay till just before he came home? Yeah, these two siblings are definitely Roux. I wish Viviane would forget Jack already. Maybe if he never said that he’d never forget her, she would have gotten over him? Or maybe if he was rude enough. Will he ever make an appearance again? Oh he did! Finally John spit it out, he finally revealed the desire he had for Emilienne. I didn’t feel sorry for him one bit. Do you think Gale would ever leave? Is Jack gonna find out about his children? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 11:
(view spoiler)[Henry. Did he just communicate with the dog? Why was Viviane a starfish? Did you figure it out? I would’ve loved to see Henry’s drawing. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 12:
(view spoiler)[Lol, it really is hard to stop after getting a taste of something you’ve forbidden yourself for so long. Desperate to know what Nathaniel’s role will be in Ava’s research. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 13:
(view spoiler)[Don’t tell me Ava is going to have her heart broken too. Did Henry somehow see the future pain she would inevitably feel? Was that a twin connection? This was spooky, wasn’t it? Henry speaking to the apparitions? Red on the floor? Ava won’t die, but did it meant she’d be broken? Why did Fatima’s ghost come now? After so many years! She said the same thing that Emilienne once said when she destroyed the child’s toys. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 14:
(view spoiler)[Are they gonna kill the bat? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 15:
(view spoiler)[Haha, Cardigan is wicked! I said that at the beginning when she came to Ava’s window and then I got really mad at her. But Rowe definitely saved her. I liked him. I guess she does this every night now, and I think Nathaniel is going to be trouble. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 16:
(view spoiler)[Gabe is gone? Maybe it is for the best, he deserves more too. I only wish Viviane had let him in, let him in her heart. Maybe she did it for him in a way too. He shouldn’t have to stay. I am going to admit that I couldn’t let myself part with Gabe, so I searched my ebook for Gabe and saw how far in the book he was mentioned. Just to calm myself and… okay, find out on your own, you! For a moment, Nathaniel seemed sweet to me and then totally creepy and sick. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 17:
(view spoiler)[What was the church scene about? It’s weird, isn’t it? That every woman’s story we read from Emilienne to Ava, the girl had at least two choices in the men she could chose, and she always ended up with the wrong choice. Do you ship her with Rowe? I think he’d be better. He truly sees her. What’s the role of Fatima’s ghost constantly hovering around the twins? Is she good?
I think I got the answers to the above two questions. Fatima helped Ava lose the fever but why transfer it to Nathaniel? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 18:
(view spoiler)[I like Henry and his ways. Queer but cute. I think don’t Gabe would get over Viviane. Nathaniel is the bad man, isn’t he? It’s gonna happen anyway. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 19:
(view spoiler)[I was so excited for the festival. I loved how she prepared for it with Cardigan, and how sweet risk it felt like. I loved that she forgot Nathaniel and was with Rowe. Viviane made me even more dreadful than Henry did. What’s gonna happen? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 20:
(view spoiler)[Ahhh!! I wanted to shout Don’t go! again and again to her. What is going to happen? And then there is Jack! And oh, Henry! Did he go looking for Ava? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 21:
(view spoiler)[This was so sad. Her life has been just bakery, but I liked when she decided to leave it. I loved what she said to Rowe and then confided to René. It was so sweet. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 22:/b
(view spoiler)[Oh, how I hated Jack for saying all that shit even after so many years. I was so relieved to find her relieved from that stupid love. Gabe, where is he?!?! Jack still doesn’t know about Ava. And finally, she knows Henry is telling something important. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 23:
(view spoiler)[You know I did imagine all the other things but I didn’t think he’d cut her wings. I couldn’t read much after that. I read the very next paragraph about Emilienne and didn’t understand a word even after reading it a couple times. I took my time and then read. And then the very last line just had me choking.
Before she left the house herself, she turned back to René. “Don’t you dare take her with you,” she pleaded.
“I don’t want to,” he croaked.
The only thing I wanna know is why didn’t René tell Emilienne all of it before? Was it because she never really listened? And don’t say he really escaped! (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 24:
(view spoiler)[I never thought they could actually interact with the living. I am glad he’s gone. She never even flew, she never got to experience flight. I wish her wings could grow back again, I don’t think they would. Jack ruined Viviane and Laura’s life, and his own; but being as he is, running after superficial things, he would have betrayed or taunted Viviane if he had gotten her. I loved how the chapter ended. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 25:
(view spoiler)[Aww, I really liked Ignatius Lux. There’s nothing wrong with crying. I wanted to know more about Rowe too, but for now his letters are enough. What did René mean when he said that he volunteered? I love everyone here. Those visits and everything. Also, Emilienne isn’t gonna die now; is she? (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 26:
(view spoiler)[The birds survived? How? Even Ava hadn’t seen them decorating the sky with their colorful little bodies. I am so grateful that Emilienne parted so smoothly and so without the usual pain. I liked that part. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 27:
(view spoiler)[I loved it. I loved how it ended. Just epic! For some reason, I just didn’t want it to end. It never seemed enough. I need more! I wrote overall thoughts in the review above with tags for spoilers.
Okay, so one day later, the questions are bugging me too much to ignore are about Ava and her family tree. What was the purpose of her research when we are not told about where the strange and weird powers (I don't have another word right now) came into the family and where did John Griffith's wife go and what René meant by volunteering and why did the ghosts really linger and why did Fatima's ghost finally disappear (why was she there even in the first place?). Did other ghosts permanently disappear too? More questions might follow. I really want answers and I don't wanna take a star away from this. (hide spoiler)] ...more
