Found this book to be a little slow in the beginning but as it continued it was fantastic. I really enjoyed the story flow. It didn't have a whole lot of backstory that was separate from the actually story. The author does a really good job of weaving the events in the past with the actually story instead of making it a separate one. Which I find can be hard for a lot of authors. I love the fact that they are turning this book into a movie and I truly hope that they will stay true to the story. ...more

You ever have that feeling when you get into a book, and you’re like “WHY DIDN’T I READ THIS SOONER?” Well… I had that all over this. When I first heard about this book, the hype was all about Emma Watson being attached to the movie rights. I started hearing reviews, and most of them were bad, or more negative than positive. I wanted this book so bad!! It was a chapter break for me but as much as I enjoyed reading it, I have to be frank, it is not the greatest fantasy YA out there but still good enough for its genre. (that's a good thing, right?) And in all fairness, the plot itself was promising, the backdrop also was a good s ...more

In short, this novel is a story of a young girl, age 18, that comes into age and must be Queen. Like many YA fantasy stories this is a typical element that, if done sloppily, can feel generic. However, Erika Johansen is no sloppy fool and in her hands she creates this rich, complex and brilliant character that comes alive page after page. For starters, she builds a beautifully paced tension that hits a crescendo exactly when it needs to.

The world is also unique, in my opinion, when it comes to f

A great start to a fantasy series with a female protagonist. It was interesting to see Kelsea develop and mature as a leader over the course of the book. Many unanswered questions have me wanting to pick up the second book...right now!
