Evelyn Hernandez was born in Cuba. She is poor and she wants to overcome that. She goes to Hollywood to make a name for herself. That name is Evelyn Hugo. By talent and deceit she rises to the top of the acting world. Each of her marriages has a reason behind it- the most obvious is publicity... very rarely love.

Evelyn is nearing the end of her life and wants to record her life for posterity. For that she hires Monique Grant to listen and to write her biography. But, why? Monique is an unknown.

A guilty pleasure read. I love reading People magazine while in waiting rooms (I refuse to buy a subscription so wait until I am waiting somewhere to read) and this felt like reading People. A gossipy, guilty pleasure read. Perfect for summer reading by the pool or beach.

Ok. This is not a 5 star read simply because I think I fell victim to "anticipation expectation." I've been hearing about this book for soooooo long that I wholeheartedly built it up knowing it would blow me away. Well developed characters and relationships. Very descriptive.

*Yawn* shocking how boring and derivative I found this! What little of the themes and events might be considered 'new' - and I have grave doubts on whether any are - are shallowly handled. This very nearly was given 1 star but I did find it mildly diverting and readable during a long night of insomnia coupled with some interesting character saving and touching moments in Evelyn's life at the very end.

Evelyn Hugo is a Movie Star, a legendary one of the caliber of Elizabeth Taylor. Decades after s

Despite the many five star reviews and hype I found this to be only OK. I’ve read a lot of other books set in old Hollywood so nothing was new or unexpected on that front. I did like the book’s set-up with a section devoted to each husband- each married for a very different reason. As to the use of Monique as the recipient of Evelyn’s life story I often felt more like Evelyn was speaking directly to the reader and Monique faded away as a character until the end. A couple of plot points felt a bi ...more

Loved the complexity of Evelyn Hugo as her story unfolded. This book wasn’t what I expected in a good way. Great vacation read.
