3 1/2.

WWII is one of the periods of history I'm most interested in. Even so, I struggled to get in to this book at first. After a few chapters though, I was glad I stuck with it, because it became a fascinating and touching story. This is not just a story about some of the events that happened during the war, but also about the inner strength that exists in all of us, and shows itself when we need it to. I’ve never had such a hard time reading the first 80% of a book, only to be absolutely heartbroken (and uplifted) by the back 20%…and would do it again to be able to experience it for the first time. 😭🫶 If you’d asked me at 50% done, I’d have given this 2⭐️ for the despair of this book. But now I’m a mess. 😮‍💨🤧

Too difficult to complete

I usually don’t read WWII books…just too tragic and grim. This one was so well written I got thru the first quarter. When I could no longer take the tragedy, I skipped to the last 10%. The ending was glorious
