Loved, loved, loved, loved, loved this book. That's 5 stars for 5 loves. These characters seemed so real to me...I swear I know them. I listened to the audio version which was superbly narrated by Kathleen Wilhoite. There were moments of hilarity combined with moments of pathos but most of all you will recognize these people as your neighbors and friends. Yes, Bernadette is a little crazy but so what...she reminded me that insanity and genius are two sides of the same coin. And Elgie...well, Elgi

So much has already been written about this funny smart book that all I'll say is that I wish I'd read it sooner!

Well, blow my skirt up!!
I have to be honest. I did not expect much from this book. The synopsis didn't grab me, nor did any of the early reviews. I was looking for a "fluff" book, something easy while I was running around prepping for the holidays, and thought I would skim through this one. Was I wrong!

My only dislike is the dad/husband. I felt like his character changed halfway through. Maybe this is just me projecting my current situation onto it. I was turned off by his bit. But maybe that was the poi ...more

This was a fun book as a break from more serious books. Maria Semple writes about upper class Seattle with humor and sarcasm in this story about an architect who has developed a form of agoraphobia. She disappears and through a series of emails and articles, her 16 year old daughter describes her story. I read it quickly and enjoyed it completely.

I'm going to pass this along to some friends for other opinions. For me, the tale was too much of a farce and too much of the narrative was in the form of electronic communication (emails & such). I finished; it was worthy of that. Otherwise disappointing.
