Erdrich first came to my attention with her non-fiction work chronicling a year of mothering. Her prose is just as stunning and evocative in her fiction. "The Round House" was suspenseful, tragic, infuriating and humorous in equal parts. I'm not normally a big fan of coming of age novels, so I was a bit skeptical when I found out the narrator was a 13 year old boy, but I have to admit I was captivated. I love the way Louise Erdrich writes. Something about her straightforward yet thoughtful style really speaks to me. I always have a little trouble with an adult woman writing a first-person teenaged boy character, so that's why this wasn't 5 stars for me.

Wow...I guess I love this author. I have been avoiding her books for many years (since my college freshman roommate proclaimed The Beet Queen as the best book she ever read). Would not have ever discovered how wrong I was if not for my book club (and most did not like the book!) So now I have read 2 of her books (Plague of Doves and this one). I think this book was enriched by reading POD before but it was not necessary...just gave more insight into a couple of the characters...it's kind of a se

I am not sure why, but I just did not enjoy this book. I found myself in a hurry to finish it. I found the plot long and drawn out and really didn't empathize with any of the characters.
