This book was such a treat! I loved the fact that the story is based upon a Russian fairytale - it certainly had a magical vibe. I was very taken with the characters, the story, and the setting. The setting was probably one of the things I loved most - Eowyn Ivey made the Alaskan wilderness come alive. It was certainly a character in the book as much as any of the people. This one is fairly slow - it it told quietly, slowly and deliberately. I liked that aspect of the novel but I can see where s

4.5 stars. I loved this book. It has everything that makes a great book: atmosphere, real and memorable characters and an interesting plot. It's a book about survival, physical and emotional, but it's also about hope and renewal. I think this is one of those books that stays with you long after finishing it.

I sometimes found myself completely swallowed up in this book. The wilds of 1920's Alaska, never ending dark days of winter and the midnight sun of summer, set the background for a tale on the brink of both reality and fairy tale.
This first time author did a fabulous job of telling a story that I think would translate into an amazing movie! I can just imagine the epic scenery now...

Beautiful story about a couple who move to the Alaskan wilderness in 1920, years after the loss of their child. Still grieving in their own ways, the couple build a little girl out of snow who may end being the one thing that gives them the will to continue with their lives in the new land and with each other.

I didn't like this book at first, put it down for about a week, picked it up yesterday when I had all day to read, and after 100 pages, was hooked. It's a bit of magical realism and fairytale and Hallmark movie, so very different from the historical fiction and non-fiction that I usually read. Characters are well-developed and it's a quick read, once I got into it. So, yes, I recommend it as a light, time-off, wonder-a-bit read.

I thought this story had a lot of potential, especially with the backdrop of rural Alaska in the 20's. The description of the life there was compelling. However, I thought the story was predictable and wasn't filled in. Wasn't a satisfying read. ...more
