Having recently read and enjoyed Lupton’s second novel, "Afterwards", I decided to read her debut novel.
Beatrice’s younger sister, 21-year-old Tess, disappears. Beatrice rushes to London where Tess’s body is soon discovered. Her death is ruled a suicide but Bee adamantly refuses to believe this explanation; suspecting foul play, she sets out to do her own investigation. The novel is written as a long letter from Bee to Tess detailing her struggle to learn how and why Tess died.

I liked the story, but I wasn't crazy about the narrative style. I eventually got used to it, but for the first half of the book I was so confused and had to reread parts to make sure I'd gotten it right.

They say misery loves company and I was a little pleased to see that there were about 600 other reviewers (at the time of this posting) who agreed that this book is 2 or less star worthy.
I wont go into what the story is about. 10 million reviewers before me have done that rather well. However, I'll say this: The herrings were too red. The ending was irritating. I felt nothing for the characters. The first person narrative was annoying for me because I never could work out if this was a letter o ...more

I agree with a reviewer who said that the book jacket description did not do the book justice; it is so much more. Not only is it a mystery-thriller, it is a testament to the deep love between sisters. The writing is absolutely fantastic, descriptive and luscious. The fact that this is a debut novel makes it even more exciting. I look forward to the author's next book in April 2012.

Bee flies to London when her mother tells her that her younger sister Tess has gone missing. Initially with this book, I was thinking what a phenomenal writer this woman was and that was going to be a great book. Then the story became so full of false clues/red herrings and was drawn out, boring and extremely annoying. 98% of the way through, things suddenly changed and took a total left turn. It was so annoying that I wanted to throw my kindle against the wall. Such a promising beginning to go

This book was a delight. The form of the narrative, written as a letter from the narrator to her sister, provided a couple of surprises towards the end that made it obvious that this was a book about more than it seemed. I found that the description of family dynamics and the way that trauma can change these relationships was well crafted. It also explored the issue of who we believe and why we believe them and whether these reasons were adequate. The end of the book left me bemused and wonderin
