As Veteran's Day approaches I am reminded of the sacrifices our military men have made for our freedom. In Louie Zamparini's case he willingly went into the service during WWII when he was on the verge of becoming an Olympic superstar. He was a celebrity on the track field before he became a bombardier and risked his life as a pilot. In fact he found himself stranded in the ocean when his plane was shot down and amazingly survived for over a month at sea before being rescued by enemies. He fough

I agree with many readers that "Unbroken" is a page-turner. I enjoyed the first half of the story that encompasses Zamperini's hell-raising youth and his running accomplishments. The crescendo of the story, for this reader, was the airplane crash into the Pacific, the survival in rafts of the (almost) three airmen for 47 days and the battle for survival with the elements, the depravation, and the sharks. Like many able-bodied men of that era, Louie enlisted in the army during WWII and became an airman. With little more than ti ...more

I was completely caught up in the world of this book. It made me think about WWII in new ways, and made me ashamed that I haven't given those ideas more thought until now. I knew very little about POWs and Japan. Now I am interested in learning more. I also was very interested in the B-24- Ryan and I watched a whole training video about how to fly one. This book is what reading is all about for me- exposing me to a new world filled with amazing characters that I think about while I'm doing other
