I suggested this for one of my book clubs after I spent an afternoon in Charleston on a recent road trip. This was also my first Pat Conroy ( but it will not be my last). I just loved this book. Written from the perspective of Leo King and covers a tumultuous period of 20 years, from 1969 through 1989. As it opens, he is a lonely teenager in the summer between Junior and Senior year of high school. June 16th, Bloomsday, changes everything and it will continue to influence his life for many years

Well this was a disappointment. It started out well and I initially had high hopes that this would be an engaging book that was well written. And then the overwrought prose and unrealistic dialogue began...and continued. The unlikely plot twists began to pile up so that it became a game to guess the next one; and one of the twists that was supposed to be a big surprise was obvious at the beginning of the book but took 300 pages to be "revealed". Conroy includes characters from all walks of life in this novel .... orphans, star athletes, an aids-infected gay, oversexed goddesses of the screen, black cops, ex-nun, an abusive priest,etc... The story is told from the perspective of Leo (former nerd) gossip- writer. The amazing thing about these characters is the fact that most of them are lifelong friends. I am going to try a different Pat Conroy book. I have it the old college try but it is BORING, the characters are mostly flat and I can't get through the rest.
