What Members Thought
I picked up The Postmistress because I was going to an author event in Vermont where Sarah Blake was speaking. Her new book The Guest Book had not been available to read yet. This book started slow but quickly picked up. Without giving away spoilers there were many chapters involving the bombing of London during the Blitz that were heartbreaking. An excellent bookclub selection many things to discuss. Highly recommended.

In her latest novel, Blake gives a striking account of America on the verge of war and Europe in the midst of it and describes the horrors of Nazi Germany and the claustrophobia of small-town, mid-century America with equal aplomb. Despite some implausible plot developments, Blake maintains the story's credibility with powerful writing and a skillful manipulation of readers' sensibilities. 3 1/2 stars for me. I actually liked it :) However, I had no expectations going into it - I read the brief recommendation from NPR but then forgot about it.
It took awhile to get into it - very choppy at first. However, I was soon drawn into the story and I finished the last 200 pages quickly. I thought the glimpses we got of the war and senseless loss of life were touching. I didn't like the final ending, though. ...more

"So-So" read......slightly predictable account of married couple separated by WWII. Glad I borrowed from library instead of purchasing.
