I picked up The Postmistress because I was going to an author event in Vermont where Sarah Blake was speaking. Her new book The Guest Book had not been available to read yet. This book started slow but quickly picked up. Without giving away spoilers there were many chapters involving the bombing of London during the Blitz that were heartbreaking. An excellent bookclub selection many things to discuss. Highly recommended.

In her latest novel, Blake gives a striking account of America on the verge of war and Europe in the midst of it and describes the horrors of Nazi Germany and the claustrophobia of small-town, mid-century America with equal aplomb. Despite some implausible plot developments, Blake maintains the story's credibility with powerful writing and a skillful manipulation of readers' sensibilities. Although critics cited an awkward beginning, some expository excesses, and a tendency to overdramatize, the ...more

A WWII story told from the outsides of battle, involving the lifes of several different people that all intersect at the end. They include a newly married doctor and his wife, a small town postmistress, a small town mechanic, an international radio newswoman, and an Austrian recently come to America.

This book was well written, everything made sense, and the conclusions were satisfying, even when they were less than pleasant. I especially liked the end of the book where the author talked about ho

A wonderfully original novel set during the very beginning of WWII.

"What would you think of a postmistress who chose not to deliver the mail?"

War has begun in Europe, Americans are in denial, and President Roosevelt is promising the country that our boys will not go over to fight someone else's war. In London during the Blitz, radio correspondent, Frankie Bard struggles to get Americans to pay attention to the war, the bombs, and the Jewish refugees, by bring the sounds and stories of war to A

3 1/2 stars for me. I actually liked it :) However, I had no expectations going into it - I read the brief recommendation from NPR but then forgot about it.

It took awhile to get into it - very choppy at first. However, I was soon drawn into the story and I finished the last 200 pages quickly. I thought the glimpses we got of the war and senseless loss of life were touching. I didn't like the final ending, though.
