I am just going to say it...Chris Bohjalian is one of my favorite authors. I have loved MIDWIVES forever and this is the fourth book of his that I have read. I "suggested" it for one of my book groups and all of the members enthusiastically agreed. While I was not a big fan of the character of Heather Laurent and her beliefs about angels, I could not completely dismiss her. This was a very good summer read. Warm days, porch suppers and fresh from the garden green peas, with a hefty dose of domestic violence.

A couple is dead in an apparent murder suicide. The story is told by different narrators. There is Steven, the parish priest, Heather, who writes about her encounters with angels, and finally Kate, the teenaged daughter. They are all complex, but I wasn't really sure how Heather helped along the narrative. I didn't buy her role in this story.
