A long-running series often suffers from burnout, with tired characters, recycled plot lines, and increasingly unimpressed readers. Fortunately, this is not the case with The First Rule, which critics described as action-packed, ultra-violent, and very, very entertaining. I'm glad Crais has given Joe Pike another novel of his own. He deserves a little front time, and Elvis Cole functions well in his role reversal as a sidekick. Pike is mysterious, dangerous, monosyllabic, and action driven. No stranger to dangerous missions, he sets out to uncover who killed one of his former comrades, along with his entire family, and why. The action was fast paced and the dialogue compact as Pike proceeded to settle the score.
