A long-running series often suffers from burnout, with tired characters, recycled plot lines, and increasingly unimpressed readers. I'm glad Crais has given Joe Pike another novel of his own. He deserves a little front time, and Elvis Cole functions well in his role reversal as a sidekick. Pike is mysterious, dangerous, monosyllabic, and action driven. No stranger to dangerous missions, he sets out to uncover who killed one of his former comrades, along with his entire family, and why. The action was fast paced and the dialogue compact as Pike proceeded to settle the score.

Wow! This second book in the Joe Pike series is just as good, if not better than the first one. I am wondering how I missed this author and why I have never read him before. I am going to order all of the Elvis Cole books from the library.
EXCELLENT! Great opening which leads to a really tight mystery/action story. Joe Pike is in his prime with help from Elvis Cole. This earned 4 1/2 stars from me - a very satisfying Crais novel!!
