A tongue-in-cheek coming of age story about a naive young woman and her introduction to society in Bath. Lots of laughs and miscues as she pictures herself as the heroine in a gothic novel.

I haven't read much of Jane Austin, but reading Northanger Abbey helped me to understand why she is such a beloved author. At first the story of young Catherine's adventures in society seem frivolous, but Austen is so skilled at bringing her heroine to life that the reader can't help but form a fondness for her. This novel was written in the early 1800's, so what a pleasure to have a vivid account of that time period and the culture of England society.
