What Members Thought

What a great book! Low key story of an older man's life told via flashbacks of memory which are triggered after meeting a neighbor from a transformative year of his life as a youth. Takes place in Norway circa WWII. Beautiful and simple imagery.

This is a story as reticent as the portagonist in revealing the depths of sorrow, but revelation is there for those who take the time to ponder the many subtle references and recurring images. This isn't a book to be read blithely and added to the list of what one has read. The embers of this book only create a warming fire if you take the time to look deeper: Twins, Homecomings, Books, Deaths, Felled Trees, Dogs, etc. etc..

It was a quiet, reflective novel that seemed to pull it's mood from the surrounding environment. As nature and the winter season unfolded, Trond gave in to seasons of his past spent on the river with his father. It seemed that by conquering his fear of the winter and what it might have in store for him, he was able to thaw his heart and look back on the summer where he became a man.
