This book was on my to-read pile for quite a while; I finally got to it, but it took me some time to get through it since it’s a dense read.

The plot is straightforward. Marion and his twin brother Shiva are born in Ethiopia in 1954 to a Carmelite nun and a British surgeon. They are “orphaned” because their mother dies in childbirth and their father flees. I feel like I should be awarded a medical degree after reading this book. I loved it despite the detailed, step by step directions on how to operate on a diseased liver, for example. Great characters, sweeping plot, and a central question of revenge, retribution, who deserves punishment, etc.

A well written book. As an Ethiopia, I was happy to see how the author captured the good, the bad and the ugly in his beautiful prose.
