What Members Thought

I think I am one of the last to read this; I had caught the exasperation in Ann's voice on one of the recent podcasts about those among us who had not read this great novel. I had it on my TBR pile for a long time, but it was so well worth the wait. The story of twins born in a mission hospital in Ethiopia in the 1950s, losing their mother at birth and their father soon after made for gripping reading. Abraham Verghese is a wonderful writer who evokes time and place as you read their life story

What a fantastic book! I really didn't think that I would end up liking this book so much since it took forever to get off the ground in the beginning. All of the characters and their interwoven relationships were just amazing. I would recommend this read to anyone without hesitation. An audio book can be engaging and interesting while on your commute to work. A well-written epic novel as this is is then taken into your home to further enjoy the wonders of a superb and riveting first novel. To lie awake as you would with a grand book well past the midnight hour on the eve of another snowstorm listening with continued absorption until the story closes says much for the caliper of this novel.

Plus, I read it immediately before a trip to Addis Ababa, so I could really place some of the events and I really appreciated learning about the political landscape. The problems I had with the book were (sigh, again) with the somewhat flat female charact

I had put off listening to this book because I was soooo disappointed in most of the recommended books for 2009. I very much enjoyed it. Love books that evoke emotional responses & this grabbed me from the beginning. Wasn't thrilled at the end but still loved the book!
