I so appreciate the sparse writing style of Kent Haruf. His stories are powerful, provocative and character driven. I think this is my favorite yet, which makes me sad because this was the last book he wrote before his death this past year.

Our Souls at Night is a short little book that I was able to listen to in one day. The book itself should probably be rated 5 stars, but the story made me so mad that I can't bring myself to give it the 5th star.

I have never hated a character in a book as much as I hate and detest Gene, Addy's son. The book was such a heartwarming love story - just the book I needed to read right now - until he had to be written into it.

This was my first Kent Haruf novel and I am glad I have several to add to my TBR. It is a gentle, tender story of second chances which I enjoyed and which is beautifully written. Addie and Louis are 70somethings who develop an honest loving relationship that they seemingly were unable to have with their now deceased spouses. I rarely read a book in one day anymore. It was a normal occurrence as a teenager to stay up all night reading. But not anymore.
I was trying to decide what book I could read to complete my goodreads goal. No pressure, right? 🥹 I figured I had 6 days to read this book, no sweat. I read Plainsong and Eventide years ago, so I was familiar with this author's beautiful, sparse prose.
